Deaf and Blind School in Sri Lanka
At the inaugural dinner of the IPS on 3rd October, IPS chose the Deaf and Blind School in Kandy, Sri Lanka as its first fundraiser. This event was at the Residence of the French Ambassador in Stockholm.
Brief information on the D&B School The Senkadagala Deaf & Blind School in Kandy, Sri Lanka was founded in 1962. The School in Kandy is a boarding school and the children who attend it come from every part of the country. Over the years the Senkadagala School has helped numerous disabled children from 5 to 18 years old. There are now 130 children at the school, of whom almost 100 are boarders who live in a hostel during term time. The school hostel provides food and accommodation free of charge as most of the children come from very poor families in rural parts of the country.
Education Under the guidance of specially trained teachers the children follow the normal curriculum. The school has two sections: One is for blind children, who are taught in braille; in the other, deaf children are taught in sign language and lip reading. The children are taught a wide variety of subjects and skills with which they can become self-supporting in society. The IPS funds are being used to improve the children’s health, hygiene and living conditions in the hostel.
Thank you Nina Balabina and children of the Lilla Akademien for the wonderful performance at the IPS inauguration.
